There are four parathyroid glands located behind the thyroid gland. It secretes parathormone (PTH). Their main function is to regulate blood calcium levels in the body. When blood calcium levels drop, parathyroid gland secretes PTH. This hormone works to raise blood calcium levels by stimulating osteoclasts to break down bone and release calcium into the bloodstream. PTH also signals the kidneys to conserve calcium by reducing the amount excreted in the urine.
