Islets of Langerhans:

  1. Islets of Langerhans form the endocrine part of the pancreas which is a heterocrine gland
  2. Islets of Langerhans contain different types of cells which secrete different hormones:
  1. Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by beta cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. It helps in reducing blood sugar levels.
  2. Glucagon is secreted by Alpha cells of the pancreatic islets. It is the peptide hormone that raises the concentration of blood glucose.
  3. Somatostatin is secreted by Delta cells of the pancreas. It is an inhibitory hormone that inhibits the release and action of other hormones.
