Question

Name the isotope used to determine the age of rock. What is the number of sub-atomic particles in this isotope?

Open in App
Solution

Carbon(C)/Nitrogen(N) method is used to determine the age of shells, limestones, organic materials. The isotopes used are C-14/N-14.
Number of sub atomic particles in C-14:
Number of Protons = 6
Number of Neutrons= 14-6 = 8
Number of sub atomic particles in N-14:
Number of Protons = 7
Number of Neutrons= 14-7 = 7
Age of volcanic rocks is determined by Potassium/Argon method. The isotopes used are K-40/ Ar-40.
Number of sub atomic particles in K-40:
Number of Protons = 19
Number of Neutrons= 40-19 = 21
Number of sub atomic particles in Ar-40:
Number of Protons = 18
Number of Neutrons=40-18 = 22
