Lord Mountbatten was the last viceroy of the British Indian Empire and the first Governor-General of independent India.
One of the provisions of the Indian Independence Act of 1947 stated that after the partition of India, two independent kingdoms viz. India and Pakistan would be established and that the provinces of Eastern Bengal, Western Punjab, Sindh and North-West Frontier Province would be included in Pakistan.
