Question

Name the method used to separate the components of a mixture of naphthalene and common salt

Open in App
Solution

Sublimation

  • It is a process of conversion of a solid substance directly into a gaseous state without changing into a liquid state.
  • Naphthalene is a sublimable substance whereas common salt is a non-sublimable substance

Steps:

  • Take a mixture of naphthalene and common salt in a china dish.
  • Cover the china dish using an inverted funnel whose stem is closed with cotton.
  • Heat the mixture.
  • Naphthalene that sublimes on heating is collected on the cooler side of the funnel.
  • The common salt is left behind in the china dish.

Therefore, sublimation can be used to separate components of a mixture of naphthalene and common salt.
