Question

Name the organic compound which was prepared by Wohler in his laboratory

Open in App
Solution

Organic compounds were only found naturally in plants and animals.

But Friedrich Wohler was a German chemist, who was trying to prepare an organic compound from inorganic compounds.

Firstly, he prepares Ammonium cyanate (NH4CNO) by heating Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and Potassium cyanate (KCNO).

The chemical reaction is:

NH4Cl+KCNONH4CNO+KCl(Ammonium(Potassium(Ammonium(Potassiumchloride)cyanate)cyanate)chloride)

After heating of Ammonium cyanate (NH4CNO), Urea ((NH2)2CO) is formed.

The chemical reaction of formation of urea is:

NH4CNOHeat(NH2)2CO(Ammonium(urea)cyanate)

Therefore, the first organic compound synthesis in the lab is Urea.
