Ammonia:

  • Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3.
  • Ammonia is a colorless, poisonous gas with a sharp pungent suffocating odor.
  • It is naturally produced by the decay of plant and animal matter.
  • It is commercially prepared by Haber's process.
  • In this process atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted to ammonia (NH3) by reacting it with hydrogen (H2).
  • The reaction is as : N2+3H22NH3
  • In this process Iron is used as a catalyst, and during the whole process temperature is maintained around 400 – 450oC and a pressure of 150 – 200 atm.
