Question

Name the salt which is a weak electrolyte and a base which is a weak electrolyte.

Solution

Weak electrolytes are those electrolytes which dissociates partially in the aqueous or molten state.

1. Sodium carbonate Na2CO3 is an example of weak electrolyte salt.

Na2CO3H2O2Na++CO32-(Sodium(Sodium(Carbonatecarbonate)ion)ion)

Carbonate ion will further dissociates into bicarbonate and hydroxide ion:-

CO32-H2OHCO3-+OH-(carbonate(Bicarbonate(Hydroxideion)ion)ion)

2. Ammonia (NH3) is a weak electrolytic base.

NH3H2ONH4++OH-(Ammonia)(ammonium(hydroxideion)ion)
