Neurons

  1. The nervous system is made of neurons. Neurons are the fundamental signaling and functional unit of the nervous system.
  2. Neurons are electrically excitable and relay information by the transmission of impulses between the organs and the central nervous system.

Types of neurons

  1. Based on the action they perform, neurons are classified into three types.
  2. Sensory neurons- transmit nerve impulses from the sensory organs to the brain or spinal cord.
  3. Intermediate or relay neurons- make connections between the spinal cord and neurons of the brain.
  4. Motor neurons- transmit impulses from the brain or spinal cord to the effector organs.
