Name the types of cells that make up the xylem and the phloem.

Xylem: The xylem is the tissue that transports water and minerals from the root. It is made of four cells:-

  1. Xylem vessels are long dead cells involved in the transportation of water.
  2. Tracheids are long dead cells with tapering ends and are involved in the transportation of water.
  3. Xylem parenchyma cells are living cells and involved in the conduction of water as well as minerals and storage of some substances.
  4. Xylem sclerenchyma cells are long, narrow dead cells that provide support to the plant.

Phloem: It is the tissue that conducts food to different parts of the plant. It is made up of four cells:-

  1. Sieve tubes are living cylindrical cells involved in the translocation of food.
  2. Companion cells are long, thin-walled cells involved in the metabolic process on the behalf of sieve tubes.
  3. Phloem parenchyma cells are thinned walled cells involved in the transportation and storage of food.
  4. Phloem sclerenchyma cells are dead cells that provide support to plants.
