Solution
Vegetative propagation:
Vegetative propagation is the process of asexual reproduction by which new plants are produced from the vegetative parts of the plants.
The vegetative parts of the plants include stems, leaves, roots, etc.
Methods of vegetative propagation in plants:
1. Layering:
In layering, a lower branch of the plant is bent in the ground and buried under the soil such that the tip of the branch is above the soil.
Soon, the roots start to develop from the buried branch and it develops into an independent plant.
This method is used for the propagation of jasmine and other ornamental plants.
2. Grafting:
In grafting, two plants are joined to grow together as a single plant.
It is usually done in plants that have a weak root system or do not root easily.
The two plants are tied together such that they are in direct contact with each other.
The new plant thus produced has a good root system and gives an increased yield of fruits and flowers.
This is commonly used to grow varieties of mango, lemon, grapes, and roses.
3. Tissue culture:
Tissue culture is defined as the technique a large number of complete plants are produced from a few plant cells or tissues by growing them in a culture medium.
For this process, undifferentiated cells from the root tip or shoot tip are taken.
These plant cells have the ability to divide again and again and are able to develop into a new plant under appropriate conditions.
