The three types of papillae are:

  • fungiform (mushroom like)
  • filiform (filum - thread like)
  • circumvallate
fungiform and circumvallate these two papillae contains taste buds.

Third type,
  • Filiform papillae – these are thin, long papillae “V”-shaped cones that don’t contain taste buds but are the most numerous. These papillae are mechanical and not involved in gustation. They are characterized by increased keratinization.These are the most numerous papillae seen on the surface of the tongue and are hair like or thread like in appearance projecting out from the dorsal surface of the tongue and are seen on the front two thirds of the tongue
