Question
Normally no catalyst is required in the electrophilic addition reaction of alkenes, But benzene requires a catalyst. Explain.
Open in App
Solution
In benzene the there 6
π
electrons which are delocalized over the entire ring of the benzene.
While in alkene the
π
electrons are delocalized over only two carbon atoms. Thus, benzene has a lower charge density than alkene.
So no electrophilic addition reaction can take place between benzene and bromine.
Thus benzene requires a catalyst for the electrophilic addition reaction.

Assertion :Alkenes usually undergo electrophilic addition reaction at carbon-carbon double bond. Reason: Electrophilic addition at double bond produces carbocation intermediate.

Q.
Assertion :Methanol cannot be prepared by the hydration of an alkene. Reason: Hydration of alkenes is electrophilic addition reaction. Alkenes when treated with dil. sulfuric acid form alcohol by Markonikov's rule and the protonation gives more stable carbocation and the minimum number carbons required is two.
