On a map drawn to a scale of 1:50,000, a rectangular plot of land ABCD has the following dimensions. AB=6cm; BC=8cm and all angles are right angles. Find the actual area of the plot in sq km.

The area of the plot on the map is AB×BC=6×8=48cm2
The actual area of the plot is then 48×50,000×50,000cm2
Converting to sq. km., we get:
48×50,000×50,000100,000×100,000=12
Thus, the actual area of the plot is 12sq.km.
