On a map drawn to a scale of $1 : 50, 000$ , a rectangular plot of land ABCD has the following dimensions. AB $= 6$ cm; BC $= 8$ cm and all angles are right angles. Find the actual area of the plot in sq km.

The area of the plot on the map is $A B \times B C = 6 \times 8 = 48 c m^{2}$
The actual area of the plot is then $48 \times 50, 000 \times 50, 000 c m^{2}$
Converting to sq. km., we get:
$\frac{48 \times 50, 000 \times 50, 000}{100, 000 \times 100, 000} = 12$
Thus, the actual area of the plot is $12 s q . k m .$
