On going down the group, for each successive member one extra shell of electrons is added. Thus, atomic radius increase on going down the group. When going down the group from Si to Pb, there is only a small increase in the covalent radius and this is due to the presence of fully filled d and f-orbitals. These orbitals have poor shielding effect, hence, the nuclear charge doesnot decrease much on heavier atom. As a result, there is only a small increase in covalent radius from Si to Pb.
