Question

On repeated sparking, 10 mL of a mixture of carbon monoxide and nitrogen required 7 mL of oxygen for combustion. What was the volume (in mL) of nitrogen? (All volumes are measured under identical conditions)

Open in App
Solution

Let the volume of CO be x mL and that of N2 be (10x) mL.
The combustion reactions are given below:
CO2+12O2CO2
N2+O22NO
O2 required =x2 mL and N2 required =(10x) mL
x2+(10x)=7 x=6 mL
Hence, volume of N2=106=4 mL.
