Question

One kg of an ideal gas (gas constant, R=400 J/kgK; specific heat at constant volume, cv=1000 J/kgK) at 1 bar, and 300 K is contained in sealed rigid cylinder. During an adiabatic process, 100 kJ of work is done on the system by a stirrer. The increase in entropy of the system is..... J/K
  1. 287.682

Solution

The correct option is A 287.682
m=1kg;R=400 j/kg-K

cv=1000j/kgK
Ti=300k;Pi=10kPa
W=100kJ
Applying first law:
δQ=ΔU+δW
0=mcv(TfTi)+(100)×103J
0=1×1000×(Tf300)100×103
Tf=400K
Entorpy change for ideal gas
ΔS=mm[cvInTfTi+RInVfVi]
(As volume is constnat Vi=Vf)
=1×[1000In400300+0]
=287.682J/K
