One litre of a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide is passed through a tube containing red hot charcoal ,the volume now becomes 1.6 litres. Volumes are measured under similar conditions. Find out the composition of gaseous mixture.
Let volume of CO2 be X litre
Volume of CO = 1-X litre
Only CO2 will react with charcoal ( C ) to produce CO
We assume that all CO2 is converted into CO
CO + CO2 + C > 3CO
New volume will be
X CO2 converted to 2X CO
2X + 1-X =1.6
X=0.6
So in reaction mixture 0.6 Litre CO2 and 1-X or 0.4 litre CO were present.
