Question

One mole of an ideal monoatomic gas is initially at 300K. Find the final temperature (in K) if 200J of heat are added at constant volume.

Open in App
Solution

Heat supplied to a system is given by:

Δq=nCdT Where n is the number of moles of the gas and C is the specific heat capacity for the process.

Here it is given that the process is a constant volume process.
C=Cv

i.e. ΔT=qnCv

For a monoatomic ideal gas. Cv=Rγ1γ=53
Cv=32R

ΔT=2q3nR=2×2003×1×8.314=16K

i.e. ΔT=T2T1=16K

T2=T1+16=316K
