One of the two digit number is three times the other digit.When we interchange the digits of this two digit number and add the result ing number to the original number,you get 88.What is the original number

Let the original 2 digits be x and y.
So the original number is 10x+y
When we interchange digits it becomes yx so the number becomes 10y+x.
If we add 10x+y to 10y+x we get 88
so 11x+11y = 88 or x+y = 8 (1)
We also have x = 3y
so 3y + y = 8
or y = 2 and x = 3y = 6
So the original number is 62
We could have chosen y = 3x in which case x+3x= 8
or 4x = 8 or x = 2 and y = 6
so number is 26
So answer is: 62 or 26
