Question

One wall of a hall is to be painted leaving a strip of width 1.5 m along all four sides. If the length of the wall is 6 m and its breadth is 5 m, find the area of the unpainted portion of the wall.

Solution

Let PQRS be the wall that has a strip of 1.5 m along it. From the given information, we get the figure ABCD that is also a rectangle.
Length of PQRS = 6 m
Breadth of PQRS = 5 m
Area of PQRS = length × breadth
= 6 × 5 m2
= 30 m2
Now, there is strip of 1.5 m.
∴ Length of ABCD = 6 – 1.5 – 1.5 = 3 m
Breadth of ABCD = 5 – 1.5 – 1.5 = 2 m
Area of ABCD = length × breadth
= 3 × 2 m2
= 6 m2
Area of the unpainted portion of the wall = Area of PQRS ˗ Area of ABCD
= 30 m2 ˗ 6 m2
= 24 m2
