The pressure that is required to prevent water from diffusing or undergoing osmosis in spite of a difference in water potentials, is called osmotic pressure (OP). Since concentration of solute is more in a solution than in pure water, water from pure water tries to diffuse or undergo osmosis to the solution. Hence, the pressure required to prevent water entry to the solution, i.e. osmotic pressure of a solution is always higher than that of pure water or solvent.
