Question

2 resistors A and B of resistances 4 and 6 ohm resp. r connected in parallel. The combination is connected across a 6 volt battery of negligible resistance.

calculate the power dissipated in each resistor

Open in App
Solution

The resistors are connected in parallel so the voltage across both the resistors will be same which is equal to 6 V.

So, current through the 4 Ω resistance is, I4 = 6/4 = 1.5 A

The current through the 6 Ω resistance is, I6 = 6/6 = 1 A

Power dissipated across the 4 Ω resistance is, P4 = (1.52)(4) = 9 W

Power dissipated across the 6 Ω resistance is, P6 = (12)(6) = 6 W
