Question

20mL each of oxygen and hydrogen and 10 mL of carbon monoxide are exploded in an enclosure. What will be the volume and composition of resulting mixture of the gases when they are cooled to room temperature

2H2+O2- 2H2O

2Co+O2-2CO2

Solution

a.

at STP 2L of H2 will produce= 2L of H2O

1L of H2 = 1L of H2O

20 ml of H2 = 1/50L of H2O

so volume of H2O = 1/50 L

at STP

22.4 L of H2O = 18 g

1L of H2O = 18/22.4

1/50 L of H2O = 18 /22.4 x 50=.01607 g

b. 2Co+O2-2CO2

:- at STP 2L of CO will produce= 2L of CO2

1L of CO = 1L of CO2

10ml of CO = 1/100L of CO2

so volume of CO2 = 1/100 L

at STP

22.4 L of CO2 = 44 g

1L of CO2= 44/22.4

.01 L of CO2 = 18 /22.4 x 100=0.00804 g
