Question

a 0.2076g sample of an oxide of cobalt on analysis was found to contain 0.1476g cobalt. calculate the empirical formula of the oxide .[co=59amu]

Open in App
Solution

Amount of Co = 0.1476 g
Amount of O = (0.2076 – 0.1476) g = 0.06 g

Cobalt : Oxygen = 0.1476 : 0.06 (by mass)
= (0.1476/59) : (0.06/16) (by number)
= 2 : 3 (by number)

So empirical formula of the oxide is Co2O3
