we know that

v2 - u2 =2as

where

v = 0

u = 250 m/s

s = 20 cm = 0.2 m

or by rearranging, we get

a = (v2 - u2) / 2s

or

a = (0 - 2502) / (2 x 0.2)

thus, the retardation caused will be

a = -62500 / 0.4

or

a = -156250 m/s2
