Question

a lift is going upwards with an acceleration of 4.9 m/s2 .what will be the apparent weight of a 60 kg man in the lift ?what when the lift rises up with a uniform velocity of 4.9 m/s? if rope of lift is broken than?

Solution

Dear Student!!

Acceleration of the lift is , a = 4.9 m/s2

Acceleration due to gravity is , g = 9.8 m/s2

1. when lift is moving upward,

Apparent weight = m(g+a) = 60×(4.9+9.8) = 882 N

2. When the lift is moving downward direction,

Apparent weight = m(g - a) = 60×(9.8-4.9) = 294 N

3. When the rope of the lift is broken (free fall ) than,

Apparent weight = m(g - g) = 0 N
