Question

a steel cylinder of internal volume 20 litres is filled with hydrogen at 29 atmospheric pressure . If hydrogen is used to fill a balloon at 1.25 atmospheric pressure at the same temperature , what volume will the gas occupy?

Solution

According to Boyle's law, at constant temperature, pressure exerted by a gas is inversely proportional to its volume.
Hence, mathematically we can write as:
PV = k
Where k is constant.
So,we can write as,
P1V1 = P2V2 .................(i)
Here 1 is used for representing initial condition and 2 is used for final conditions.
P1 = 29 atm
P2 = 1.25 atm
V1 = 20 L
Substitute above values in equation (i)
V2 = 20 x 29 / 1.25
= 464 L
