Question

A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4m diameter has a surface charge density of 80nC/m2. (a) find the charge on the chage on the sphere.(b) what is the net electric flux leaving the surface of the sphere.

Solution

1.Given, diameter of sphere = 2.4 m
Surface charge density (σ) = 80nC/m2 = 80 X 10-9 C/m2
since, σ = ΔQ/ΔS, where Δ S is the small area element on the surface of conductor
Hence, charge Q = σ X 4π r2 = 80 X 10-9 X 4 X 3.14 X (1.2)2 = 1.44 X 10-6 C

2. Since, electric flux, ΦE = Q/ε0
electric flux, ΦE = 1.44 ×10-6 C8.85 ×10-12 C2 N-1 m-2 = 0.16 × 106 C-1N m2
