Question

A white inorganic powder A which sublimes on heating and when it is

treated with another white crystalline compound B gives a neutral gasC. Gas C on reaction with a highly inflamable gas D to form anindustrially important compound E. Compound E is also obtainedwhen compound A reacts with compound F. Identify A, B, C, D, E, Fand write any two reactions involved.

Solution

Compound A is ammonium chloride that is NH4Cl.
On heating compound A it sublimes.
Compound B is sodium nitrite that is NaNO2, a white crystalline compound.

Reaction between compound A and compound B
NaNO2 (s) + NH4Cl (s) → NaCl (aq) + 2 H2O (l) + N2 (g)

The neutral gas C is Nitrogen.

The highly flammable gas is Hydrogen H2 which is gas D

Reaction between gas C and gas D to form compound E

N2(g) + H2(g) → NH3

Compound E is ammonia, which industrial important.

Compound E is also obtained when compound A reacts with Compound F
Compound F is calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2
Reaction:
NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 → NH3 + CaCl2 + H2O
