Solution

Acidified water is used for electrolysis of water because it increases the efficiency of electrolysis. Strong acid used in electrolysis are called as electrolyte. Like sulphuric acid H2SO4 when added in water it gets separated into its constitute ions as
H2SO4 2H+ + SO42-

Ions (2H+ & SO42-) are charged species which have high conducting abilities. Thus they increases rate of electrolysis.
