Question

calcium carbonate contains 40% calcium, 12rbon and 48% oxygen by mass. knowing that law of constant composition holds good, calculate the mass of the constituent elements present in 2g of calcium carbonate.

Solution

The formula for calcium carbonate is CaCO3
The relative atomic mass of calcium = 40
The relative atomic mass of carbon = 12
The relative atomic mass of oxygen = 16.

Calcium carbonate contain one atom of calcium, one of carbon and three of oxygen.
Thus the formula weight of CaCO3 = 40+12+48=100.

So, calcium carbonate contains 40% calcium, 12% carbon and 48% oxygen by mass.

Since the mass of the constituent elements is relative atomic mass ( i.e the ratio of the average mass per atom of an element to one-12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12.) its is independent of weight of compound i.e atomic mass of calcium , carbon and oxygen remain same in 2 g also or also in any other weight too.
