Question

calculate the bond order of He2+

Open in App
Solution

As each Helium atom contains 2 electrons, the number of electrons in He2+ ion will be 3. Two electrons will enter the bonding

σ(1s) molecular orbital and the third electron will enter the antibonding σ*(1s) molecular orbital. Thus electronic configuration of He2+ will be:

[σ(1s)]2*(1s)]1

Here, Nb( electron in bonding orbital) = 2

Na (elelctron in antibonding orbital) = 1

Bond order = 1/2 ( Nb - Na )

bond order = 1/2 (2-1)

bond order = 1/2
