Question

calculate the number of electrons , protons and neutrons present in ClO-3

Open in App
Solution

ClO3- is a diatomic ion consisting of a Cl atom and an oxygen atom with an overall charge of -3. Now, the atomic number of chlorine is 17 and its most abundant isotope has a mass number of 35. Thus, the number of electrons, protons and neutrons in Cl are 17, 17 and 18 respectively.

Similarly, the atomic number of oxygen is 8 and its mass number is 16. So, the number of electrons, protons and neutrons in oxygen are 8, 8 and 8.

Hence, number of electrons in ClO3- = 17 + 8 + 3 = 28

number of protons in ClO3- = 17 + 8 = 25

number of neutrons in ClO3- = 18 + 8 = 26
