Question

Calculate the number of molecules of oxalic acid (H2C2O4.2H2O) in 100 mL of 0.2 N oxalic acid solution.

Open in App
Solution

Molecular weight of oxalic acid = 126
Equivalent weight of oxalic acid = molecular weight/ basicity
= 126 / 2 = 63
1000ml 1N oxalic acid contain 63 g
1ml 1N oxalic acid contain 63/1000 g
100ml 1N oxalic acid contain (63/1000)X100 g = 6.3 g
1000ml 0.2 N oxalic acid contain 6.3X0.2 g = 12.6 g

In 126 g number of oxalic acid molecule is 6.022X1023
In 1 g number of oxalic acid molecule is 6.022X1023/126
In 12.6 g number of oxalic acid molecule is (6.022X1023/126)12.6 =6.022X1022

Therefore in 100 ml of 0.2 N oxalic acid solution 6.022X1022 oxalic acid molecules are present.
