Question

calculate the ratio of partial positive charge on H-atom in HCL to that in HI from the following data;

dipole moment of HCL = 1.03 D , Bond Length = 127 pm dipole moment of HI = .38 D Bond length = 161 pm>

Open in App
Solution

Dear student!

Dipole moment = charge x bond length

Putting the values for HCl,

q = μ / d

Since, 1D = 10-18 esu cm

1 nm = 10-7 cm

So, q = 1.03 x 10-18 esu cm / 127 x 10-7 cm = 8.11 x 10-14 esu

Similarly for HI,

1 pm = 10-10 cm

q = 0.38 x 10-18 esu cm / 161 x 10-10 cm = 2.36 x 10-11 esu.
