At the time of independence in 1947, Pakistan was a democratic country.
On account of poor governance and corruption, dictatorship was enforced by Ayub Khan in 1958, Zia-Ul-Haq in 1977 and by Musharraf in 1999.
1970 saw the elections in Pakistan the first since independence –soon after the Indo Pak war of 1971, Yahya khan was replaced by ZA Bhutto who was then executed by Gen Zia ul Haq.
It was under Gen Haq that Pakistan returned to a conservative form of politics which started with assisting fighters in Afghanistan following the Russian invasion.
Gen Zia died in a plane crash in 1988 and democracy returned to Pakistan till 1999 when Gen Musharraf seized power from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The country has seen a return to democracy following the victory of PML (N) and Nawaz Sharif was again appointed as Prime Minister.
