differentiate between apoplast and symplast

Open in App
Solution

Apoplast Symplast
Apoplast is the non living continuity of plant body which consists of cell walls and intercellular spaces. In other words, it can be said that apoplast includes free diffusional space outside the plasma membrane. It is especially used in root system.

It the living parts of the plant body.It includes the part of the cell inside plasma membrane which has interconnected cytoplasm by plasmodesmata. It is especially used in root system.

Pathway of water through apoplast is called apoplastic pathway/transmembrane pathway. Movement of water molecules through this pathway is called apoplastic movement. Pathway of water through symplast is called symplastic pathway. Movement of water molecules through this pathway is called symplastic movement.
The apoplastic movement beyond the cortex is blocked by the casparian strip present in the endodermis.Symplastic movement can occur all throughout.
Apopoplast does not involve any interaction with the cell so, it is not regulatory.Symplast provides regulatory mechanism as it can be regulated. As some cells may lack plasmodesmata and the influx of molecules can be controlled.
