Distinguish between an exothermic and an endothermic reaction. Amongst the following reactions, identify the exothermic reaction andthe endothermic reaction.
Endothermic reaction- a reaction which requires/absorbs heat from the surroundings to proceed is called endothermic reaction.
Exothermic reaction - a reaction which releases heat to the surroundings is called endothermic reaction.
(i)Heating coal in air to form carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction
C + O2 → CO2 + heat
(ii) Heating limestone in a lime kiln to form quicklime is an endothermic reaction
CaCO3 + heat → CaO + CO2
