Endothermic reaction- a reaction which requires/absorbs heat from the surroundings to proceed is called endothermic reaction.

Exothermic reaction - a reaction which releases heat to the surroundings is called endothermic reaction.

(i)Heating coal in air to form carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction

C + O2 → CO2 + heat

(ii) Heating limestone in a lime kiln to form quicklime is an endothermic reaction

CaCO3 + heat → CaO + CO2
