Solution

  • F1 – First filial generation or first generation character.
  • F2 – Second filial generation or second generation character.

  • Mendel took a number of precautions, while performing cross breeding experiments. For instance in his experiment of making crosses with only one trait – size of the plant – (Tall & Dwarf) or colour of the flower (white & Violet) were considered. This is called Monohybrid Cross.
  • When Mendel cross pollinated a Tall and Dwarf pea plant, he got only Tall plants in the F1 generation. When F1 Tall plants were self pollinated he got both Tall and Dwarf plants in F2 generation in the ratio of 3:1.
  • The trait expressed in the F1 generation in the presence of its contrasting character is termed Dominant.
  • The trait present in F1 generation but not expressed is termed as recessive.
  • Mendel called Tall character as Dominant and Dwarf Character as recessive.
