Why do the magnets always point towards the north and south direction?
The aligning of a bar magnet along the north-south direction is caused by the earth's magnetic field. Earth is assumed to have a huge bar magnet along its axis; the north pole of this huge bar magnet is at the earth's geographic south pole and the south pole of the magnet is at the earth's geographic north pole. This is the reason why the north of the bar magnet points towards the earth's north pole.
