Question

expalin why Cu+ ion is not stable in aqueous solution?

Open in App
Solution

Cu2+ is more stable than Cu+ in aqueous medium. Cu2+ has a high hydration energy which compensates for the energy required to remove one electron from Cu+ to form Cu2+. So, in aqueous medium Cu+ gives Cu2+ and Cu ion.

2 Cu+ (aq) → Cu2+(aq) + Cu (s)
