Question

explain how the freezing point decreases with decrease of vapour pressure while boiling point increases with decrease of vapour prfessure ?

Solution

Boiling point:

It is the temperature at which vapour pressure of liquid becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure. If there is an increase in vapour pressure of liquid it will require to supply small amount of heat in order to male its vapour pressure equal to the atmospheric pressure and the the liquid will start boiling at lower temperature only.

Freezing point:

Freezing point of a liquid is the temperature at which, its solid and liquid phases have the same vapour pressure. The vapour preesure of the solid state is fixed. If the vapour pressure of liquid gets increased, the liquid has too be cooled up to more lower temperature in order to make its vapour pressure equal to that of solid.
