Question

explain regeneration of RuBP in calvin cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Regeneration of Rubp takes place at the end of Calvin cycle. The Calvin cycle is divided into three steps – carbon fixation, carbon reduction and RuBP regeneration.

In carbon fixation stage CO2 is bound with ribulose biphosphate to form 6 – carbon compound which immediately breaks down into two 3 – carbon compounds.

In carbon reduction stage these carbon compounds undergo an additional phosphorylation to form the sugar glyceraldehyde – 3 – phosphate. Total 6 molecules of glyceraldehydes are generated in this phase.

As it is a cycle, it is necessary to regenerate some products to keep the cycle moving on. Among 6 glyceraldehyde – 3 – phosphate 5 are regenerated by using 3 molecules of ATP. In this process 3 molecules of RuBP are produced which are then ready to receive new molecules and continue the cycle.
