Question

explain stomatal transpiration and the process involved in it imbibition osmosis and diffusion

Open in App
Solution

1 Loss of water which takes place though stomata in plants is called as stomatal transpiration .Stomata consist of a stomatal opening or stoma, which is surrounded by two distinct epidermal cells known as guard cells . Stomatal transpiration takes place by the opening and closing of stomata. The stomata open when there is turgidity(high water content) in the guard cells ,their thin walls become convex and bulge out so that their inner walls are drawn out causing the opening of stomata. If guard cells lose water, they become flaccid and their walls come back to the original position causing closing of stomata.

2 Imbibition is type of diffusion where a fluid is taken up by a solid material which results in the swelling of that material. In this process, the fluid is adsorbed by the material as it does not get mixed up with the constituents of the solid material, it stays more towards the surface and the presence of the liquid increases the size of the solid material.

3 Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.

4 Diffusion is the movement of a substance (e.g., an atom, ion or molecule) from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. (spreading of molecules in a wide area)
