Question

Explain the whole process to balance the following eqution in detail :-

Pb (NO3)2 ----- PbO + NO2 + O2

Open in App
Solution

Reaction
Pb(NO3)2 PbO + NO2 + O2
is not balanced since atoms on both side are not equal.

Generally element other than oxygen and hydrogen are balanced first. Then it will be easier for you to balance the equation.

In this equation, Pb is equal on both side. so no need to balance it.
Then check for N. Left hand side has 2 N while there is only 1 N on right hand side. Thus multiply NO2 by 2. This will balance N.
So the reaction will be :
Pb(NO3)2 PbO + 2NO2 + O2

Now Check for O. There are 6 O on left hand side while 7 on right hand side.
thus we can multiply O2 by 1/2 to balance it.
Therefore the balanced reaction will be:

Pb(NO3)2 PbO + 2NO2 + 1/2O2
