Question

Four pieces of magnesium, gold, chromium, and copper are put in beakers of silver sulphate, aluminum nitrate, calcium chloride, iron sulphate respectively. Answer the following questions based on this activity:

a. In which of the beakers color change and displacement occur?

b. Give reason for each reaction?

c. Arrange the metal pieces in the decreasing order of reactivity.

Solution

Dear Student

a) Colour change and displacement will takes place in silver sulphate beaker since magnesium is placed above silver in reactivity series so magnesium will displace Ag and will form Magnesium sulphate (White) so colour changes from black ( AgSO4) to white (MgSO4)

b) Reaction is only possible in case of ist case which is shown below , reaction in other cases not possible because according to the reactivity series of the metal all metals other than Magnesium will not be able to displace the metals in their respective beaker owing to their low reactivity.

Mg + AgSO4 ---> MgSO4 + Ag

c) Metal pieces in decreasing order of their reactivity are as follows :
Magnesium > Copper> Chromium > Gold
