how a rocket can fly in outer space and why the jet aircrafts are not able to do so ?

Jet aircrafts use atmospheric oxygen as a fuel or they use atmospheric oxygen for combustion whereas a rocket does not require atmospheric oxygen, it has its own fuel. Therefore jet planes can not fly in free space or vacuum but rocket can move through space or vacuum.
