Question

how can the state of matter be changed by applying/decreasing pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Only change in pressure doesn’t necessarily change the state of matter. For change of state of a matter the temperature must be such the change is possible. State of matter changes from gas to liquid or liquid to solid or from gas to solid due to application of high pressure at certain temperature. The change occurs because when pressure is applied the molecules of a substance come closer and as their intermolecular space decreases they sometimes change state. Like LPG gas is liquefied and stored in the cylinders at room temperature at high pressure. Carbon dioxide gas can be solidified at room temperature under high pressure. But we can never liquefy hydrogen whatever be the pressure at room temperature.
